The Applied Layer

About

An editorial publication on enterprise AI.

The Applied Layer is an independent research publication on enterprise artificial intelligence. It exists to study, document, and report on the layer where AI meets the operating reality of organisations — the architectural, integration, governance, and delivery decisions that determine whether AI investments produce durable business value or expensive theatre.

The publication is editorial in posture and vendor-independent in practice. It is not a newsletter of takes, a launch tracker, or a consultancy lead-generation channel. It does not run sponsored content, accept paid placements, or solicit comment from vendors on roadmap pieces. Where a vendor is named, it is named because the evidence requires it.

What we cover

Reference architectures and the patterns that hold under load. Retrieval, agents, and evaluation as they are actually built in enterprise environments. Operating models, governance, and lifecycle controls. The economics of running large models in production: token cost, infrastructure cost, and the total cost of ownership over a multi-year horizon. Industry lenses on media, financial services, public sector, and professional services where useful published evidence is available.

What we deliberately do not cover

Daily commentary. Rapid response to model releases. Unverifiable benchmark league tables. Tutorial content. The publication chooses depth and durability over volume. Output cadence is measured in weeks and months, not hours.

What Volume I is, and what comes after

Volume I (May 2026 to May 2027) is a literature and landscape synthesis. The reviewed research package is built from public primary sources: technical reports and arXiv preprints, regulatory primary documents, named-enterprise case material, official benchmark submissions, and methodologically-transparent industry surveys. Pillar-specific titles, frameworks, case selections, and findings are withheld from the live site until editorial review is complete.

From late 2026 the publication's interview programme activates: structured practitioner questionnaires, Patron-only roundtables, and longitudinal cohort tracking of named programmes. The research base widens from public-source synthesis to a hybrid that includes first-hand primary signal.

Independence

The publication has no vendor sponsors, no affiliate relationships, and no paid syndication. Editorial decisions are made on the basis of evidence and editorial judgement. Conflicts of interest, where they exist, are disclosed in the relevant piece.

Output mix

Research Reports are the flagship output, monthly to bi-monthly. Briefings are sharper single-question pieces, weekly to fortnightly. Reference Architectures are versioned, citable technical references suitable for inclusion in architecture board papers. Field Notes are shorter pieces from inside real deployments. The Annual Outlook is a once-a-year synthesis report designed to be the most-cited single output of the year.
